About us
Sometimes the first sign of a chimney problem is not smoke. It is a mark on the ceiling after a hard rain. A little rust around a fireplace. A musty smell when the house has been closed up for weeks. From inside the room, those details may seem small. Behind them, there could be more than one possible cause.
Brothers Mike Hangen and Danny Cohen founded Edison Chimney Services in 1998 with a straightforward idea: homeowners should be able to understand what is happening with their chimney or fireplace before deciding what to do about it. That remains the way we approach the work today.
A chimney is not just the brick above the roof. The cap, crown, flashing, flue, damper, firebox and surrounding materials all have different jobs. Water near a fireplace does not automatically mean the flashing has failed. A smoky room does not automatically mean the chimney needs to be rebuilt. Even a fireplace that has not been used lately can need attention.
We start by listening to what you have noticed. Does the stain appear only after wind-driven rain? Does the fireplace smell different when the air conditioning runs? Has a damper become hard to move? The answers help guide an inspection, but they do not replace one. Where the cause is not visible, we explain what needs a closer look.
From chimney inspections and chimney sweeping to chimney repair and fireplace repair, our aim is to recommend work that fits the actual condition of the system. Sometimes that means a focused repair. Sometimes it means discussing a larger problem and the reasons behind the recommendation. Either way, you should know what the proposed work is meant to solve.
Fireplaces in South Florida often have a different rhythm from those in colder states. A homeowner may go months without lighting a fire, then want the system ready on the first cool evening. Meanwhile, warm humid weather and frequent rain can affect the exterior of a chimney whether the fireplace is used or not. Near the coast, exposed metal parts may face additional wear.
Those conditions do not mean every home has the same problem. A masonry chimney in an inland neighborhood, a factory-built fireplace with a metal chase cover, and a gas unit in a coastal property each deserve an assessment suited to the equipment. We do not assume that one repair works everywhere simply because the homes share a ZIP code.
You do not need to know the name of every chimney component before you call us. Tell us what you are seeing or smelling, when it happens, whether the system burns wood or gas, and your ZIP code. A photo can be helpful, but it cannot show everything inside a flue or behind a fireplace.
We want the next step to make sense to you. If a part can be repaired, we can discuss that option. If more inspection is needed before anyone can give a responsible answer, we will say so. When a system shows signs that it may be unsafe to use, stop using it until it has been evaluated.
